In this demonstration, calcium carbide is placed in a cylinder containing water. A reaction occurs producing acetylene gas bubbles. A plastic tube from a chlorine gas generator is placed in the cylinder. As the bubbles of acetylene and chlorine collide, flashes of light are produced. These flashes of light are actually explosions! Acetylene contains a high-energy C-C triple bond. When this bond is broken by the reaction with chlorine, a great deal of energy is rapidly released causing explosions.
