The nucleosomes wrap further and compact DNA into chromotin, limiting DNA accessibility to the cellular machineries which require DNA as a template. Histones play a central role in transciption regulation, DNA repair, DNA replication, and chromosomal stability. H2B has a broad antibacterial activity.
