The integrins are a family of more than 23 heterodimeric transmembrane proteins that mediate cell-cell adhesions as well as cell-substratum adhesions and signal transduction processes. Integrins are heterodimers consisting of noncovalently associated α and β subunits. Human CD51 is an integrin alpha v chain which can associate with five different beta chains (β₁, β₃, β₅, β₆, and β₈) to form various adhesion molecules. CD51 is found in endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts, mast cells, monocytes, osteoclasts, platelets, and melanoma cells.
