The antibody is specific to the 240 kD a-fodrin molecule of all mammalian nonerythroid cells and chicken a-spectrin. The antibody cross reacts with human, rat, chicken, rabbit and guinea pig. Monoclonal antibody to a-fodrin is derived from the hybridoma produced by fusion between myeloma cells and Balb/c spleen cells. Chicken red blood cell membranes purified by hypotonic lysis and mechanical enucleation were used as immunogen.
