DescriptionRegenerating Islet-derived 1, also known as REG1, is a novel protein encoded by a multigene family comprising of REG and REG-related genes known to be involved in regeneration. REG1A and REG1B are the proteins encoded by these REG families of genes and belong to the pancreatic stone protein family. They are comprised of 166 amino acids and differed by only 22 amino acids with a C-type lectin domain. Known to be identical to that of pancreatic stone protein, REG proteins may be involved in the expansion of beta-cell mass during regeneration as well as in the maintece of normal beta-cell function. These may act as inhibitors of spontaneous calcium carbonate precipitation and may also be associated with neuronal sprouting in brain, and with brain and pancreas (islet) regeneration. Expression of REG proteins is common in pancreas and liver.
