• Deoxycholic acid is a 5beta-cholan-24-oic acid derivative with hydroxy substitutions at carbons 3 and 12

• Deoxycholic acid’s role is to absorb fats by emulsifying and solubilizing them

Applications

• Deoxycholic acid may be used for laboratory study of submental fat

• Deoxycholic acid is capable of disrupting cell membranes

• In laboratory research applications, deoxycholic acid can be used to solubilize proteins or as a secondary standard
