Alkaline phosphatase catalyses the removal of a phosphate group from BCIP-T, generating a product that oxidizes and dimerizes to dibromodichloro indigo. The reducing equivalents produced during the dimerization reaction reduce NBT to an insoluble purple dye, diformazan.
