DescriptionHOXD13 (homeobox protein D13) belongs to a class of transcription factors called homeobox proteins. In vertebrates, homeobox are found in clusters called A, B, C, and D on four separate chromosomes. Expression of homeobox proteins is spatially and temporally regulated during embryonic development. The gene encoding HOXD13 is part of the D cluster on chromosome 2. Deletions that remove the entire HOXD gene cluster or the 5 ft. end of this cluster have been associated with severe limb and genital abnormalities. Mutations in the HOXD13 gene cause synpolydactyly.
