Hissing Cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa)

• Foss™ compatible and easily maintained in classroom terraria
• Provide hiding places (cardboard egg cartons work well), warmth, food and source of moisture
• Random sex
• Need permit for Arizona, California, Florida and Tennessee

Live Crickets (Acheta domesticus)

• Used for animal food, nutritional studies and other laboratory experiences
• Random sex
• Mixture of mature and immature only

Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor)

• Most often used as food for laboratory amphibians and reptiles, beetles also demonstrate complete metamorphosis
• Simple to culture in classroom
• At optimal temperature of 30°C, complete life cycle may take 4 to 6 months

Milkweed Bugs (Oncopeltus fasciatus)

• Nymphs have five instars
• Life cycle takes about one month, depending on culturing temperature

Praying Mantis Egg Cases (Paratenodera sinensis)

• Display incomplete metamorphosis
• One egg case can produce 100 to 200 mantises
• May take 2 to 6 weeks to hatch
• Warm and humid conditions necessary for hatching
• Seasonal item
• January through June only
• Cannot ship to Florida

Sow Bugs (Terrestrial Isopod)

• Also known as wood lice
• Maintain in terrarium with rich, moist humus
• Add flat rocks or rotted wood to provide hiding places
• Used for studies of adaptation
• Also used as food for small amphibians or reptiles
