Human placental lactogen (hPL) is known to originate in the syncytiotrophoblasts. Ultrastructural localization indicates that placental lactogen is stored in small morphologically distinct cytoplasmic granules within these cells and has a different secretory mechanism from other hormonal peptides such as human chorionic gonadotropin.
