Protein may be present in the urine under non-pathological conditions such as pregnancy, dehydration and exercise. Pathologic increases are seen with severe burns, nephrotic syndrome, multiple myeloma, heavy metal poisoning, diabetic nephropathy, pyelonephritis and preeclampsia. Protein will be elevated in cerebrospinal fluid with meningitis, encephalitis, brain tumors, intracranial hemorrhage, traumatic injury and poliomyelitis.
