Supplier: Thermo Scientific™ R065030
Description
Differentiate enterococci from group D streptococci using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Tryptic Soy Broth with 6.5% NaCl. Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) was originally developed without the addition of serum or blood1 for susceptibility testing of pneumococci to sulfonamides. In 1973, Facklam recommended use of TSB w/6.5% NaCl in combination with the bile esculin test to differentiate nonenterococcal group D streptococci from Enterococcus spp2. Enterococci are salt tolerant and will grow in TSB w/6.5% NaCl while nonenterococcal group D streptococci will not grow in salt broth3.
Used for differentiation between salt-tolerant and salt-intolerant species.
- Ready-to-use – Convenience of prepared medium
- Differential medium – Enterococcus spp. will grow in the presence of 6.5% NaCl while other streptococci, including group D streptococci (not enterococci) and some group B streptococci will not grow
This medium contains casein and soy peptones that provide amino acids and other nitrogenous compounds necessary for the growth of microorganisms. Dextrose is a ready source of energy. Sodium chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Addition of dipotassium phosphate maintains a stable pH.
