Acetic Acid
Acetic acid (CH3COOH, CAS 64-19-7) is a weak organic acid. A key component of metabolism with applications as a hydrophilic protic solvent, reagent, antibacterial agent, and manufacturing component; can be diluted into vinegar or concentrated into glacial acetic acid.
Also known as ethanoic acid or methane carboxylic acid, acetic acid is a colorless liquid organic compound with a pungent smell and a distinctively sour taste. Acetic acid may be produced industrially from methanol or by bacterial fermentation.
In the laboratory, acetic acid is used as a chemical solvent or reagent, and its antibacterial properties are used to prevent the growth of fungus and bacteria.
Acetic acid has multiple commercial uses, including:
- As a solvent
- In the production of cellulose acetate and polyvinyl acetate
- For making acetate, acetic acid ethylene, acetic anhydride, and halogenated acetic acid
- As a component for manufacturing inks and dyes, synthetic fibers and textiles, pesticides, and wood glues
Corrosive in its concentrated form, workers should use proper personal protective equipment to prevent ingestion, inhalation, and contact with eyes and skin; suitable respiratory equipment may also be appropriate. Keep acetic acid away from heat sources and oxidizing agents, reducing agents, acids, and alkalis. Store in a cool, well-ventilated area.

Ganirelix acetate is an injectable competitive gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist. It directly competes against the endogenous molecule for receptor binding, leading to a rapid reduction in estradiol levels. It can be used for researching ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
- Targets GnRH with an IC50 of 3.6 nM in HEK293 cells
- Antagonizes human GnHR receptor activity
- Suitable for research on ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)
- Causes rapid reduction in estradiol levels

Glatiramer acetate is a synthetic analogue of myelin basic protein and an immunomodulating agent. It inhibits Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and can be used for research on multiple sclerosis. It binds strongly and promiscuously to MHC molecules, competing with various myelin antigens for presentation to T cells. Additionally, it potently induces specific suppressor cells of the T helper 2 (Th2) type, which migrate to the brain and lead to in situ bystander suppression.
- Immunomodulating agent.
- Inhibits Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).
- Can be used for the research of multiple sclerosis.
- Exhibits strong and promiscuous binding to MHC molecules.
- Induces specific suppressor cells of the T helper 2 (Th2) type.
- Increases BDNF levels (in vitro studies).
- Improves performance in motor function measures in Huntington's disease mouse models (in vivo studies).
