Tryptose is an enzymatic digest of protein for use in preparing microbiological culture media in a laboratory setting. Tryptose is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Tryptose was developed while studying growth requirements of Brucella spp. Huddleson found Tryptose media to be equal or superior to meat infusion media, providing uniformity for the cultivation and differentiation of fastidious organisms including Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Streptococcus milleri and Brucella spp.. Casman reported that a medium consisting of 2% Tryptose, along with other media ingredients, equaled fresh beef infusion base with respect to organism growth. Tryptose is recommended in broth and agar formulations, and when used in media containing blood to permit hemolytic reactions. Tryptose is used in the preparation of Tryptose Broth (Product Code No. NCM0087).For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/tryptose

m FC Agar is used with rosolic acid for the detection and enumeration of fecal coliforms by membrane filtration in a laboratory setting. m-FC Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Geldreich et al. formulated a medium to enumerate fecal coliforms (FC) using the membrane filter (m) technique without prior enrichment. Many standard method membrane filtration procedures recommend m-FC media for testing water. The American Public Health Association (APHA) specified m-FC media and incubation at 44.5 ± 0.5°C in the fecal coliform procedure and other tests. The Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) specifies m-FC Agar for detecting total coliforms and fecal coliforms in foods. The US Environmental Protection Agency specified using m-FC media in fecal coliform methods for testing water by the direct MF method or the delayed-incubation MF methods. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/m-fc-agar

Sabouraud Dextrose Broth is used for the cultivation of fungi from sterile and non-sterile products. Sabouraud Dextrose Broth conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP Requirements and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.A medium recommended by the Harmonized Pharmacopoeia for the enrichment of Candida albicans from non-sterile samples and fungal test strain cultivation. Conforms to USP/EP/JP performance specifications. The peptones and dextrose provide a nutritious base for luxuriant fungal growth and the acidic pH affords selectivity against bacteria. Due to the high carbohydrate content and low pH this medium is highly sensitive to overheating. According to the Harmonized Pharmacopoeia, Sabouraud Dextrose Broth is used as an enrichment broth, with subculture performed onto Sabouraud Dextrose Agar. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/sabouraud-dextrose-broth

SIM Medium is used for the differentiation of microorganisms on the basis of hydrogen sulfide production, indole production, and motility in a laboratory setting. SIM Medium is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Semisolid media have been used extensively in the determination of bacterial motility. The production of hydrogen sulfide, indole formation, and motility are useful diagnostic tests in the identification of Enterobacteriaceae, especially Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. In 1940, Sulkin and Willett demonstrated motility, hydrogen sulfide production, and carbohydrate fermentation by members of Salmonella and Shigella groups. They called attention to the “brush-like growth” or motility of the typhoid organisms. Greene et al. used SIM Medium to detect motility in a large series of cultures of typhoid organisms. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/sim-medium

Terrific Broth, Modified is used with glycerol in cultivating recombinant strains of Escherichia coli in a laboratory setting. Terrific Broth, Modified is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Terrific Broth, Modified was developed by Tartoff and Hobbs to increase yields of plasmid DNA from transformed E. coli and is a popular choice of media available for plasmid preps. While cells grown in Terrific Broth, Modified can grow slower than other liquid media, the final cell density and plasmid yields are 2 – 4 fold higher. The higher yield is a result of the increased concentration of Enzymatic Digest of Casein and Yeast Extract in this formula. Glycerol is used as a carbohydrate source, and unlike glucose, is not fermented to acetic acid. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/terrific-broth-modified
