EC (Escherichia coli) Medium is a selective enrichment broth utilized for the detection of coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli at elevated temperatures. EC Broth, developed by Hajna and Perry, is a buffered lactose medium with casein peptones and bile salts. Lactose supports coliform growth, peptones provide nutrients, and bile salts inhibit gram-positive bacteria. Fecal coliforms are detected by lactose fermentation with gas production in Durham tubes under elevated incubation: 24 h at 44.5 °C for water, wastewater, and shellfish; 48 h at 45.5 °C for other foods (44.5 °C for shellfish).• Product meets AOAC, APHA, BAM, EPA, ISO, and SMWW reference methods and performance criteria.• EC Broth should be used by trained professionals within a laboratory setting. • Product is not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of disease or other human conditions.
