Fact or Fiction?

As much as 50 percent of lab inventory is not needed.

Fact. Based on a four-month study involving multiple labs, Unity Lab Services estimates that anywhere between 15 to 90 percent of inventory goes unused.

Using only a "Just In Time" inventory model is always best.

Fiction. Where research is highly variable and supply demand is uncertain, having a better balance of inventory models can reduce overall costs.

Researchers can get distracted by managing their lab supplies.

Fact. Average researchers spend more than two hours a week ordering and putting away supplies. Also, they lose valuable time looking for supplies and meeting compliance issues.

There is always enough room in labs to store supplies.

Fiction. Excessive supplies take up valuable lab space and create potential safety concerns.
