2,4-D sodium (2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetate) is a selective herbicide effective against broad-leaved weeds. It functions by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting DNA and protein synthesis, thereby disrupting normal plant growth and development. In laboratory studies, it inhibits the viability of A549 and WI38 cells with IC50 values of 126 μM and 115 μM, respectively, and can induce apoptosis by influencing the cell cycle. In vivo studies have also shown toxic effects on the reproductive system of male rats, including reduced organ weights and sperm viability.
