2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) is a neutralizer, buffer, and surfactant. It inhibits gelatinous product formation and is used for carbon dioxide absorption. It is also used for histochemical demonstration of alkaline phosphatase activity. In animal studies, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (300-380 mg/kg, dermal exposure) does not cause liver effects in rats, and at 0-600 ppm (p.o., 8 weeks) shows no compound-related changes in mice. However, at 1100-1700 mg/kg (p.o., 30 days), it showed elevated SGPT and OCT serum levels in some rats, without accompanying gross pathology or histopathology changes.
