4-(Dimethylamino)phenol is a potent cyanide antidote. It increases extracellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) without significantly affecting gluconeogenesis. This compound does not decrease ATP content until the membrane becomes permeable to LDH. Its toxicity is linked to its reaction with glutathione and the formation of covalent complexes, which impairs cellular function.
