This gene encodes a 28S mitochondrial ribosomal protein from the S15P family, involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitoribosomes, made of 28S and 39S subunits, differ from prokaryotic ribosomes by having more protein than rRNA and lacking 5S rRNA. Mitoribosomal proteins vary widely across species, making them hard to identify by sequence. This protein is over twice the size of its E. coli counterpart, though 12S rRNA binding sites are conserved. It is the least conserved small subunit protein between humans and mice. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 15q and 19q.
