This gene encodes a cytochrome P450 enzyme, part of a superfamily of monooxygenases involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and lipids. The protein, located in the endoplasmic reticulum, metabolizes up to 25% of commonly prescribed drugs, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, analgesics, and antiemetics. The gene is highly polymorphic, with certain alleles causing a poor metabolizer phenotype, where individuals have reduced drug metabolism. Some poor metabolizers carry two null alleles or lack the gene entirely. Individuals with the ultrarapid metabolizer phenotype may have three or more active gene copies. Multiple isoforms result from alternative splicing.
