Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine- and threonine-specific kinases activated by calcium and diacylglycerol, involved in various cellular signaling pathways. PKC members also serve as receptors for tumor-promoting phorbol esters. Each PKC family member has a unique expression profile and role. The protein encoded by this gene is a PKC family member expressed exclusively in the brain and spinal cord, localized to neurons. It is essential for neuronal functions like long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), and knockout studies suggest it plays a role in neuropathic pain. Defects in this protein are linked to spinocerebellar ataxia-14 (SCA14). Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
