Acifluorfen is a protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PROTOX) inhibitor herbicide. It promotes the accumulation of protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) and induces tumors in the rodent liver. It also causes strong photooxidative destruction of pigments and lipids in sensitive plant species.

- Causes rapid depletion of ascorbate in far-red light grown plants.
- Can be used in animal modeling to create liver injury and cardiac disease models.
- Induces single cell necrosis of hepatocytes, inflammation, and increased ALT levels in mice.
- Induces heart dysfunction in zebrafish, marked by an enlarged heart area, edema, and decreased heart rate.
