The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the pentraxin family, which includes serum amyloid P component and pentraxin 3. Pentraxins are involved in complement activation and regulation by interacting with pattern recognition molecules and complement regulators. The protein has a calcium-dependent ligand binding domain with a flattened beta-jellyroll structure. It exists as a pentamer in circulation or as a monomer in tissues. It plays a role in host defense by recognizing pathogens and damaged cells, initiating their elimination through humoral and cellular effector systems. Its plasma levels increase during the acute phase response to injury, infection, or inflammation. Elevated expression of this protein is linked to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection.
