Chlorhexidine-d8 dihydrochloride is a deuterium labeled form of Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, an orally active cationic antimicrobial agent. It targets microbial cell membranes, binding to phospholipids non-specifically to destroy membrane structure and induce leakage of cell contents. It exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by interfering with membrane permeability, causing protein precipitation, and disrupting energy metabolism. This leads to rapid inhibition of microbial growth and induction of cell death.
