Cinacalcet is an orally active, allosteric agonist of the Ca receptor (CaR), primarily used for cardiovascular disease research. In in vivo studies, it has been shown to significantly reduce parathyroid gland weight in 5/6 nephrectomy animals and blood ionized calcium levels in sham animals. It also causes a marked reduction in circulating parathyroid hormone.
