Fomivirsen (ISIS-2922) sodium is an antisense 21 mer phosphorothioate oligonucleotide and an antiviral agent. It is utilized in cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMV) research, including in AIDS. Fomivirsen sodium functions by binding to and degrading the mRNAs that encode the CMV immediate-early 2 protein, thereby inhibiting virus proliferation.
- Antiviral agent used in cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMV) research.
- Inhibits virus proliferation by binding to and degrading mRNAS encoding CMV immediate-early 2 protein.
- Antisense oligonucleotide that disrupts virus replication through an antisense mechanism.
- Inhibits CMV replication in human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and human fibroblast cells (MRC-5 cells) in a dose-dependent manner.
