Docusate Sodium is a key ingredient in stool softeners. It acts as a sulfated surfactant that can inactivate viral pathogens by disrupting viral envelopes and/or denaturing/disassociating proteins. It has shown effectiveness in vitro against both wild-type and drug-resistant strains of HSV type 1 and 2. Additionally, Docusate Sodium is identified as an obesogen; developmental exposure to it has been linked to increased adult adiposity, inflammation, metabolic disorder, and dyslipidemia in offspring fed a standard diet in mice.
