Doxorubicin HCl is an anthracycline antibiotic. Doxorubicin works by interfering with the DNA in cells, preventing the synthesis of new DNA and RNA. It does this by intercalating between DNA base pairs, causing breaks in the DNA strands, and inhibiting the activity of topoisomerase II, an enzyme involved in DNA replication.
Ultimately, these actions lead to the inhibition of cell division and cell death.
