Histatin 5 TFA is an inhibitor of host matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9, with IC50 values of 0.57 μM and 0.25 μM, respectively. It is a salivary protein that also exhibits antifungal activity by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration in *Candida albicans* cells. Histatin 5 is taken up by *Candida albicans* and associates with mitochondria intracellularly, reducing respiration in isolated mitochondria and intact blastoconidia in a dose and time-dependent manner.
