This gene encodes a CXC chemokine, commonly known as interleukin-8 (IL-8), a key mediator of inflammation. IL-8 is secreted by immune and epithelial cells and acts as a chemotactic factor, guiding neutrophils to infection sites. Its expression is rapidly induced by bacterial and viral products. IL-8 contributes to proinflammatory signaling and is involved in conditions such as SIRS, bronchiolitis (RSV-related), cystic fibrosis, coronary artery disease, and endothelial dysfunction. It also promotes tumor migration, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis. IL-8 binds to CXCR2 (IL-8RB), increasing vascular permeability, and higher IL-8 levels correlate with worse outcomes in diseases like sepsis. This gene is part of a chemokine cluster on chromosome 4q.
