Integrins are transmembrane receptors that mediate cell adhesion, cytoskeletal rearrangement, and signaling. This gene encodes the alpha 8 subunit of the integrin alpha8beta1, a single-pass membrane protein with multiple FG-GAP repeats that form a beta propeller structure. The alpha8beta1 integrin regulates mesenchymal cell recruitment into epithelial structures, cell-cell interactions, and neurite outgrowth in sensory and motor neurons. It plays a key role in wound healing and organogenesis. Mutations in this gene are linked to renal hypodysplasia/aplasia-1 (RHDA1) and chronic kidney disease models in animals. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms of this gene.
