This gene encodes a protein in the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) subfamily which includes RNA-binding proteins that interact with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA) These proteins influence pre-mRNA processing and other mRNA metabolism and transport processes While primarily located in the nucleus some hnRNPs shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm The encoded protein contains four quasi-RNA recognition motif (RRM) domains that bind RNAs particularly intronic polypyrimidine tracts involved in pre-mRNA splicing It may also facilitate U2 snRNP binding to pre-mRNAs and is involved in the ubiquitin-proteasome degradation pathway This protein is found in the nucleoplasm and perinucleolar structures Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms
