The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex consisting of a 20S core and a 19S regulator. The 20S core contains 4 rings of 28 subunits, with 7 alpha and 7 beta subunits. The 19S regulator includes a base with 6 ATPase and 2 non-ATPase subunits, and a lid with up to 10 non-ATPase subunits. Proteasomes, present in high concentrations in eukaryotic cells, cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway. The immunoproteasome, a modified proteasome, processes class I MHC peptides and replaces the 19S regulator with the 11S regulator (PA28). This gene encodes the beta subunit of the 11S regulator, which is induced by gamma-interferon. Three beta and three alpha subunits form a heterohexameric ring. Six pseudogenes for this gene are located on chromosomes 4, 5, 8, 10, and 13.
