L-Citrulline is an amino acid derived from ornithine in the catabolism of proline or glutamine and glutamate, or from L-arginine via the arginine-citrulline pathway. It is also obtained during the degradation of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), a process catalyzed by dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH), yielding dimethylamine (DMA) as a coproduct. It is an endogenous metabolite and human endogenous metabolite.
- Derived from ornithine or L-arginine pathways
- Obtained during ADMA degradation
- Molecular weight of 175.19
