Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins that form the major noncollagenous component of basement membranes, involved in processes like cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, and metastasis. They consist of three non-identical chains: alpha, beta, and gamma, forming a cruciform structure. Each chain is encoded by a distinct gene with multiple isoforms. Different combinations of alpha, beta, and gamma chains form various laminin isoforms, such as laminin 1 (alpha1beta1gamma1). The functions of these chains are not fully understood, though their tissue distribution suggests diverse roles. This gene encodes the gamma 1 chain isoform. Unlike the beta chain, it lacks a short alpha region. Inactivation of both gamma 1 chain alleles in transgenic mice causes a lack of basement membranes, showing its role in laminin assembly. Multiple polyadenylation sites generate two mRNA variants (5.5 and 7.5 kb) in humans.
