Malate dehydrogenase (MDH EC 1.1.1.37) is an NAD oxidoreductase that catalyzes the NAD/NADH-dependent interconversion of malate and oxalacetate. This reaction is critical to maintain the malate/aspartate shuttle across the mitochondrial membrane and Krebs tricarboxylic acid cycle in the mitochondrial matrix. Increased MDH activity has been observed in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers disease.
