Methylene blue trihydrate is a versatile cationic thiazine dye (CAS 7220-79-3, C.I. 52015) used across microbiology, histology and analytical chemistry. Supplied as green to dark green crystals or powder with a characteristic metallic luster, it dissolves readily in water, where a 20 ppm solution gives a clear blue colour with absorption maxima between 658 and 668 nm. It serves as a biological and bacteriological stain, a redox indicator, and a reagent in many staining and titration procedures. Practical grade, molecular weight 373.90, loss on drying 8.00 to 18.00%. Store below 30 C. Packaged as a 100 g powder.
