Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic targeting anaerobic bacteria and protozoa commonly utilized in biomedical research to investigate bacterial and protozoal infections Mechanistically it interferes with microbial DNA synthesis via nitro group reduction under anaerobic conditions Experimental assays have shown that Metronidazole inhibits the human organic anion transporter 3 (OAT3) which mediates cellular uptake of various drugs in tissues In functional transporter studies Metronidazole displayed inhibition toward OAT3-mediated substrate transport with an IC50 value of approximately 6 51 M suggesting potential implications in drug-drug interaction studies involving transporter activity modulation
