Free acid form of the cytoprotective PGE1 analog misoprostol. Misoprostol prevents NSAID-induced gastric ulceration. The free acid form is active in cell free assays and in cell culture and receptor preparations (receptor binding assays etc.). The methyl ester form (misoprostol, BML-PG051) is a prodrug and must be hydrolyzed via intracellular or other esterases in order to display biological activity.
