MPEP (CAS 96206-92-7) is a highly selective and systemically active antagonist of the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 (mGlu5) It demonstrates potent inhibitory activity with an IC50 of 36 nM for mGlu5-mediated phosphoinositide (PI) hydrolysis in human mGlu1b-expressing L (tk-) cells and exhibits no detectable effect on mGlu1b or on group II and III mGlu receptor subtypes at concentrations up to 100 M MPEP also effectively inhibits DHPG-induced PI hydrolysis in hippocampal striatal and cortical slices (IC50 values of 8 nM 20 5 nM and 17 9 nM respectively) It is widely utilized as a pharmacological tool to investigate mGlu5 function and has demonstrated anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects in animal behavioral models
