Nalidixic acid is a quinolone antibiotic effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It acts in a bacteriostatic manner at lower concentrations and is bactericidal at higher concentrations. This antibiotic functions by inhibiting a subunit of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, thereby reversibly blocking DNA replication in susceptible bacteria.
