Natamycin (Pimaricin) is a macrolide antibiotic agent derived from various Streptomyces strains. It inhibits fungal growth by preventing the transport of amino acids and glucose across the plasma membrane. It is used as a food preservative, an agricultural antifungal agent, and in research related to fungal keratitis. Unlike other polyene antibiotics, its mode of action does not rely on ergosterol-dependent permeabilization of the plasma membrane.
