Pentamidine is an antimicrobial agent that interferes with DNA biosynthetics. It inhibits the parasite Leishmania infantum with an IC50 of 2.5 μM. It is also a potent and selective inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPases) and phosphatase of regenerating liver (PRL). Pentamidine shows potential for the treatment of Gambian trypanosomiasis, antimony-resistant leishmaniasis, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and possesses antitumor and antibacterial activities.
