Pentamidine is an antimicrobial agent that interferes with DNA biosynthetics. It inhibits the parasite Leishmania infantum with an IC50 of 2.5 μM. Pentamidine shows potential for the treatment of Gambian trypanosomiasis, antimony-resistant leishmaniasis, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and possesses antitumor and antibacterial activities.
