Pilocarpine is a selective M3-type muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (M3 muscarinic receptor) agonist, intended for research use only. Studies have shown its effects both in vitro and in vivo.

  • In vitro: induces dose- and time-dependent proliferation retardation and morphological abnormalities in human corneal stromal (HCS) cells at concentrations above 0.625 g/L.
  • In vitro: evokes concentration-dependent relaxation with an EC50 of 2.4 mM in isolated segments of rat tail artery.
  • In vivo: significantly increases saliva secretion in exercised rats compared to control rats.
  • In vivo: leads to significantly lower Na+ concentration in the saliva of exercised rats compared to control rats.
