The presence of caprolactone repeat units in the copolymer reduces the degree of close packing between lactide repeat units leaving the polymer with nice elastic properties while maintaining a relatively slow degradation profile. This allows PLA-PCL copolymers to be used in drug delivery and medical device coating applications for controlled release applications.
