Prochloraz is an imidazole antifungal that functions as an estrogen receptor (ER) and androgen receptor (AR) antagonist, and an aromatase inhibitor. It strongly inhibits the microsomal cytochrome P-450 dependent 14α-demethylation of lanosterol during ergosterol biosynthesis, leading to membrane disruption and eventual cell death. In vivo, it acts as an antiandrogen by reducing reproductive organ weights, affecting androgen-regulated gene expression in the prostate, and increasing luteinizing hormone levels.
