Propidium Iodide (PI) is a nuclear staining agent that binds to DNA, emitting red fluorescence upon embedding in double-stranded DNA. This analogue of ethidine bromide is commonly used in the detection of apoptosis or necrosis, and is often utilized in flow cytometry analysis due to its inability to pass through intact cell membranes, only staining nuclei in cells with damaged membranes.
- Emits red fluorescence upon DNA binding.
- Fluorescence wavelength: 493/617 nm.
- Wavelength after DNA mosaic: 536/635 nm.
- Permeates only damaged cell membranes.
- Targeted as a fluorescent dye for DNA/RNA synthesis.
- Emission maximum (Em): 615.
- Excitation maximum (Ex): 535.
