The protein encoded by this gene is the founding member of the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphate monoesters on tyrosine residues. PTPs are key signaling molecules that regulate cellular processes such as growth, differentiation, the cell cycle, and oncogenic transformation. This PTP acts as a negative regulator of insulin signaling by dephosphorylating the insulin receptor kinase. It also dephosphorylates epidermal growth factor receptor kinase, JAK2, and TYK2 kinases, implicating it in cell growth control and responses to interferon. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
