(R)-(-)-Gossypol acetic acid is the levorotatory isomer of the natural product Gossypol. It binds to Bcl-2, Mcl-1, and Bcl-xL proteins with high affinity, showing potent activity against head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) cell lines in vitro. It induces apoptosis in HNSCC tumor cells with functional p53 and also kills tumor cells with mutant p53 via a different mechanism.
